| General Information about Carpenter Bees |

Carpenter Bees are wood destroying insects are most active during the Spring (April - June). These bees are large in size and look very similar to Bumble Bees. Both Carpenter Bees and Bumble Bees are black and yellow in color, however Carpenter Bees have a shiny black abdomen while the abdomen of Bumble Bees is covered in dense black hairs. Carpenter Bees are most easily recognized by their erratic flight patterns. These bees are often seen diving and darting about as well as "chasing" one another in flight. Carpenter Bees are a solitary bee that creates nests by chewing a perfectly round entry hole (it will appear that the area was drilled) and then tunneling into the wood. Once they have chewed tunnels into the wood they will lay between 6-8 eggs and provision them with a pollen food source called "Bee Bread". Each female creates her own nest, however many females will typically nest in the same vicinity on the structure. Areas that are most commonly affected include the trim along the roofline however they will nest in a variety of other areas on the home as well such as around deck railing, play sets, gazebos etc. In many cases there will be a brownish stain on the wood directly beneath the entry point into their nest. This stain is caused by the Carpenter Bees tunneling their nests. Once they begin establishing nests on a structure they return on an annual basis. |
